ExtensionGuard - Privacy Policy

The short version

ExtensionGuard audits your installed browser extensions for risks. It can contribute anonymized extension risk signals to a shared database so everyone benefits. Your extension list is never sent without your consent.

What ExtensionGuard does

ExtensionGuard analyzes your installed Chrome extensions for excessive permissions, known malicious behavior, abandoned maintenance, and suspicious update patterns. It gives you a risk score for each extension so you can decide what to keep.

Data collection

ExtensionGuard does not collect your name, email, browsing history, or any personally identifiable information. There is no account and no registration.

When you opt in to crowdsourced protection, ExtensionGuard contributes anonymized extension risk signals to a shared database. This includes extension IDs, permission sets, and detected risk patterns. It never includes your personal extension list as a whole or anything tied to you personally.

Network activity

ExtensionGuard makes network requests in two cases:

• Extension metadata lookups: queries Chrome Web Store metadata and known-malicious extension databases to assess risk
• Crowdsourced contributions (opt-in): sends anonymized risk indicators for individual extensions to the Excalion API so newly discovered threats can be flagged for all users

Your complete list of installed extensions is never transmitted.

Permissions

• management: to read the list of installed extensions and their permissions for local analysis
• storage: to save your preferences and cached risk assessments locally

Where your data lives

Your preferences and extension risk assessments are stored locally in chrome.storage.local. This data never leaves your device. If you uninstall the extension, this data is deleted automatically by Chrome.

Third-party services

ExtensionGuard queries the Chrome Web Store API and known-malicious extension databases. Only individual extension IDs are sent for these lookups, never your full extension inventory.

Cookies and tracking

ExtensionGuard does not use cookies and does not track you in any way.

Supported browsers

ExtensionGuard works on Chrome, Edge, and Brave. This privacy policy applies equally to all supported browsers.

Changes to this policy

Any changes will be reflected in extension updates. The date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.
