PrivacyLens - Privacy Policy
Last updated: 2026-08-26
The short version
PrivacyLens scans pages locally for trackers and fingerprinting scripts. It can contribute anonymized tracker findings to a shared database so everyone gets better detection. Your browsing history is never collected.
What PrivacyLens does
PrivacyLens X-rays every page for third-party trackers, cookies, and fingerprinting scripts. It shows exactly who collects your data, what techniques they use, and whether cookies are dropped before you consent.
Data collection
PrivacyLens does not collect your name, email, browsing history, or any personally identifiable information. There is no account and no registration.
When you opt in to crowdsourced protection, PrivacyLens contributes anonymized tracker fingerprints to a shared database. This includes tracker domain names, script signatures, and cookie classification data. It never includes page content, your IP address, or anything tied to you personally.
Network activity
PrivacyLens makes network requests only when crowdsourced contributions are enabled (opt-in). In that case, it sends anonymized tracker fingerprints to the Excalion API so newly discovered tracking techniques can be identified for all users.
All page analysis (script detection, cookie classification, fingerprinting detection) runs entirely in your browser.
Permissions
- activeTab: to scan the current page for tracking scripts and cookies
- storage: to save your preferences and tracker databases locally
- webRequest (read-only): to observe network requests and identify third-party tracking domains
Where your data lives
Your preferences, tracker databases, and scan history are stored locally in chrome.storage.local. This data never leaves your device. If you uninstall the extension, this data is deleted automatically by Chrome.
Third-party services
None. PrivacyLens does not share any data with third parties. Crowdsourced contributions go only to the Excalion API and are fully anonymized.
Cookies and tracking
PrivacyLens does not use cookies and does not track you in any way. It detects trackers - it does not become one.
Supported browsers
PrivacyLens works on Chrome, Edge, and Brave. This privacy policy applies equally to all supported browsers.
Changes to this policy
Any changes will be reflected in extension updates. The date at the top of this page will be updated accordingly.
